Hymnography as Exegesis

onHymnology as Exegesis
Why is hymnology so important in the Orthodox Christian Faith? Imagine you didn’t read or write. You had heard and learned about Christianity, and you were convinced Christ was the Savior of the World. You entered an Orthodox Church and surrounding you were colorful images depicting Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection. Your eyes grew wide as you saw the iconic teachings of the Christian faith. But then something else seized your senses. It was SONG. Beautiful SONG. Hymns, chanted poetically and prayerfully, about the very images you were witnessing with your eyes. You see, Hymnology is an Exegesis, an explanation of Scripture, theology and holy tradition.
Orthodoxy speaks to the whole person, hearing, seeing, feeling, tasting and smelling. God wants to touch us in every way, as He is the Creator of the whole person. May we continue to learn and worship through the blessed hymnology of our Church, experiencing the presence of God and intersecting with His heavenly Kingdom.
