ikona is sisters Presvytera* Stacey Dorrance and Presvytera Marika Brown and Chrysanthy Therianos. These three sisters grew up in Denver, Colorado, attending Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Their love for music was nurtured from an early age by their parents and from childhood into adult life they sang in choirs, studied music and wrote their own pieces.
After each of the three sisters had started their own family, they decided to come together to record some of their favorite hymns and their original compositions as a gift for their parents. This recording became Eikona’s first:
O Gladsome Light. For over fifteen years, Eikona has continued to record beloved services of the Orthodox Church, special hymns, and original compositions.
The Greek word
eikona (pronounced ee-kona) means image. It is the goal of Christians to imitate Christ. While we are created in the image of God, it is the patient and consistent striving throughout life that brings us closer and closer to Christ, to make our lives a witness and true image of God. The group chose the name, Eikona, in order to set before them the goal of growing in the Image of the Living God through their music.
*Presvytera is the Greek title for the wife of a priest. Presvytera Stacey and Presvytera Marika are each married to a Greek Orthodox priest.
